Smorgasburg – Ethiopian Tacos

September 2, 2012 by Emily Pergament

Generally unlikely food combinations, like trout almondine or bacon ice cream, end up tasting amazing. So when I saw Ethiopian tacos at Taste of Ethiopia at Smorgasburg I was very confident that it would be good. While everyone else ordered ice cream cookies, I was excited to try the split pea taco since I had never eaten Ethiopian food before.

Ethiopian Split Pea Taco

I think I must have been expecting some kind of Ethiopian twist on a traditional Mexican taco. What I got was almost certainly more authentic but disappointingly tasteless as well. The “taco” was an airy flavorless sponge-bread, and between it was a boring yellow split pea paste and a few pieces of lettuce. It was probably the healthiest food I ate all day, which only reinforces my inability to eat healthy. However, if you are looking to be nourished I guess I would recommend it. But nobody goes to Smorgasburg for nourishment alone.

Pretty much what I expected for this review. And from an Ethiopian taco.

When Ryan and I move to NYC, can we all go back to this place together?
