I have eaten schnitzel twice in my life, and I still cannot explain what it is. That’s what wikipedia is for:
Schnitzel is a breaded cutlet dish made with boneless meat thinned with a hammer (escalope-style preparation), coated in bread crumbs and fried.
Ok, now that we have the particulars out of the way, I can reveal what really attracted me at this Smorgasburg vendor: PRETZEL BREAD! Pretzel bread is bread with big pieces of salt, charred like a pretzel, and dark brown like a pretzel. It’s amazing. When Emily and I went on our cruise I had at least three pieces with every meal if possible.
Schnitz NYC serves delicious chicken schnitzel sandwiches on pretzel bread with onions and a subtly spicy mustard sauce.
The schnitzel is crispy and moist, and the pretzel bread is awesome. Again, I would probably eat chicken liver if you put it on pretzel bread, but the schnitzel is a much better compliment. If it was me, I would call this place “Pretz” instead of “Schnitz,” but that would ruin their “Schnitz happens” t-shirts.
