  1. Local Astoria Italian

    5

August 31, 2012 by Emily Pergament

At Broadway and 35th Street in Astoria, there are two Italian restaurants on opposites sides of the street. On the north side is Bartolino’s, which was probably opened a few days after the first Italian immigrant discovered northwest Long Island. The meals there are long, reasonably priced, filled with all the classics, and topped off with a grizzly but lovable (maitre’d/waiter who will give you a free limoncello after dinner if you order wine or go with a groupon.

The other is Donato’s, on the south side, which was opened a few months ago. Let’s just say Bartolino’s has nothing to worry about.

  2. Labor Day weekend

    1

August 31, 2012 by Emily Pergament

Finally! One of my six holidays that work gives me off! They are few and far between, let me tell you (well, except for Christmas and New Years).

This weekend, we’re planning to go to Smorgasburg, Panchito’s (a restaurant whose only web presence consists of terrible reviews, but we love it, and it’s sentimental to us), and Rob’s parents’ for a BBQ. Tonight, we’re going to happy hour (if Rob ever returns from the longest haircut of all time!) and dinner.

What are your Labor Day weekend plans?

  3. Homemade chicken veggie soup for lunch

August 31, 2012 by Emily Pergament

On Tuesday night, I made soup in the crock pot. I LOVE the crock pot, even though the things that I make in it don’t always turn out right. (Take, for example, the veggie lentil chili that I thought I was making, but it was the consistency of refried beans when it was done. That’s ok, we ate it on tortillas.)

But this soup is pretty good.

  8. Cooking class

    1

August 31, 2012 by Emily Pergament

We took a cooking class at the Institute of Culinary Education over the weekend. It was a couples cooking class, taught by a couple who wrote a cookbook (“awwww!”). There were seven couples, split between three tables. Our table (two couples) made a chicken, apples and potatoes dish, sweet potato hash and pear tart. The other tables made potato pancakes (there were a lot of potatoes, come to think of it…), steak, kale salad and fish with two different toppings. Oh, and also a cocktail to have with our meal.

    Chicken, potatoes and apples

Sweet potato hash – jalepenos, chorizo and goat cheese on top, which I liberally applied

Kale salad with onions, hazelnuts and cheese

  9. Date night part 2 – 59 E 59 theater

After dinner, we went to see the Summer Shorts at 59 E 59 – a theater at that address in Manhattan. It was our fourth show there, the third time at the bar, and our second time at the bar as 29 under 29 members. 29 under 29 members pay $29 per year if they are under 29 years old. The benefits include two cocktails for $9 (usually $8-$12 each), two tickets per show for $15 or less each on the two smaller stages, and $20 for the main stage (and I’ve seen tickets as expensive as $60!). This is awesome because Rob holds the membership, but we each get the benefits. And the plays we saw (three one-acts) were great – they were the best we’ve seen, out of seeing three different sets of Summer Shorts.
